If the self-closing door to your garage isn’t closing hard enough to latch properly or the door slams shut, you can adjust the spring hinge tension with a hex wrench and pliers. Start by removing the locking pin (Photo 1). Then add or release tension until you get the proper close rate (Photo 2).
1. Remove the Locking Pin
Place the hex wrench into the socket at the top of the spring hinge and turn in either direction to release tension on the pin. Remove the pin with a pliers.
2. Tighten or Loosen in Small Steps
Rotate the wrench until the next hole comes into view and install the pin. Test the door close rate. Repeat until the door closes and latches without slamming.
