Dion Phaneuf is a Canadian-born ice hockey player who trades with the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League. He was drafted in 2003 by the Calgary Flames. Dion Phaneuf was born on April 10, 1985 in Edmonton, in the province of Alberta, Canada. Both of her parents are from the province of Prince Edward Island. Her mother, Amber, is a nurse and her father, Paul, earns his living as a construction worker. He was raised alongside a younger brother named Dane. Dion’s mother is a former figure skater and he is also the fourth cousin of former competitive figure skater, Cynthia Phaneuf.

Professional career
In the 2003 NHL Draft, Dion Phaneuf was selected 9th overall by the Calgary Flames. However, he only joined the Flames in 2005 when he signed his first professional contract with the team. His professional career took off on an impressive rookie season. This talented player scored 20 goals during the 2005-06 season, setting a new record for most goals scored by a rookie defenseman in Calgary Flames history. He was also named to two NHL All-Star Games (2007 and 2008) during his time with the Flames.
Phaneuf’s stint with the team came to an end following a not-too-impressive 2008-09 season in which he recorded a career-low 11 goals and 47 points. The NHL star was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in January 2010 on a 7-man deal. He was named Leafs captain on June 14, 2010, and made his third All-Star Game in 2012.
